About this event

“Language in, language out” … the more children hear language and engage in genuine conversations, the more their language and thinking develops. Children use language to explore and make sense of the world, and language development is highly influenced by the amount of exposure that babies and young children have to language and positive interactions.

This course will look at ways in which children typically develop receptive language (understanding) and expressive language (talking). We will explore links between early language development and phonological development, leading into early reading and writing. We will look at the role of phonics (decoding and encoding) and making and taking meaning when children become readers and writers. There will be time to reflect on your own practice and be inspired to return to your setting with new ideas and more confidence to help all children become confident communicators and access the rich world of books and writing.

Please bring along something special that you can use to create a spell!

This course will enable delegates to:

  • Revisit and extend their understanding of how children develop early communication and language skills;
  • Develop their understanding of the role of phonics in learning to read and write;
  • Reflect on how they can support early communication, language and literacy development through the characteristics of effective learning;
  • Discover new ways to create language-rich spaces & places.
