Dorking Nursery School and Children's Centre

Do you want to find out more about how to enhance your child's development and learning? If so, we have a range of courses covering every age and stage of your child's early life.

Being a parent doesn't mean that you have to stop building your confidence and skills and this year we have extended the range of courses focusing on your needs. Our courses are always welcoming, fun and interactive, and run at times to suit you and your family.

To make it even easier, free creche places are usually available.

Post-natal groups

We run 3 week post-natal courses at Goodwyns Road for first time mothers. The course covers issues such as sleep, weaning, safety and language development.
Please call Jackie on 01306 740095 for further information. To add your name to the waiting list speak to Becky or Sarah at either site.

Anxiety Workshop

  • What is anxiety?
  • How do we get anxious?
  • Techniques to manage anxiety

These 2 week workshops held at the Goodwyns Road site are for all parents, grandparents and carers who suffer from feelings of anxiety. They are relaxed and friendly and focus on ways of maintaining and improving emotional health.

Crèche available.

Baby Massage

Baby Massage classes usually run twice a term for 4 weeks and are for babies under 6 months old.

It is a fun way to:

  • Bond and spend time with your baby
  • Make new friends.
  • Learn some simple baby massage strokes

The day of the course may vary for each course so ring the centre to find out when the next one is planned for.  The groups are very popular so we give priority to families referred to us by health partners and those living in RH4 and RH5 postcodes. If you live outside our reach area, we are happy to let you know where your local Children's Centre is and help you to find the services you need.

Brush up on your Maths

  • Did Maths at school send you into a panic?
  • Are you ready to improve your everyday Maths skills?
  • Do you want to work towards a Maths qualification in the future?

This 7 week course is for anyone who wants to improve their Maths skills but found Maths in school a chore. The course covers maths needed for everyday life and will be taught in a supportive way with lots of practical ideas to help students.

The course costs £39 for the 7 weeks programme (FREE if you are on income related benefits).

Exploring Communication Development Workshops

Did you know that talking to your child helps their brain to develop? Reading to your child will help them at school when they are older? To find out more about how children learn to talk come along to this 3-week workshop where we look at how children learn language and communication from birth to 4 years of age. There will be time to discuss what parents can do to help support language development and ideas to try at home.  Please call to put your name on the waiting list or for more information.

 

First Aid Course

This course is run by Surrey Care Trust and aims to give participants the confidence to act appropriately in difficult situations and will include assistance to babies, children and adults.

The course includes:

  • Basic life saving skills for Adults
  • Emergency first aid procedures
  • Dealing with unconscious casualities
  • Minor injuries
  • Childhood illnesses

We run courses during the day time and in the evening. To add your name to the waiting list, please ring us at the centre.

Once you have been offered a place on one of the first aid courses we will ask for a £5 booking fee to secure your place. This helps us to cover the administartive costs of running the course and to cover refreshments. If we do not recieve the £5 booking fee before the start of the course, your place will be given to another family as this is a very popular course and there is always a waiting list for places. Tuition is provided free of charge by Surrey Care Trust.

 

HENRY - Healthy Eating and Nutrition for the Really Young

The HENRY course runs for 8 weeks - to find out when the next course is running, find out more or to put your name on the waiting list for this course or other healthy eating courses, ring Sarah on 01306 740095 or Becky on 01306 882397.

Free creche places are available.

We ask for £20 per familiy to go towards covering the cost of materials, breakfast and refreshments.

 

Introduction to Solid Foods

Once a month, on the 2nd Friday of the month, from 10am to 11am, the Health Visiting team will be holding an “Introduction to solid food” talk at our Goodwyns Road site. Please let us know if you intend to come.

Parenting Puzzle

Raising children can be puzzling at times, but puzzles have solutions – and the Parenting Puzzle provides them.

The Parenting Puzzle workshop is a 10 week course that encourages parents and carers to enjoy bringing up their child and get the best out of family life.  It offers positive, practical ways of guiding your child so they learn to handle both their feelings and their behaviour.  The course is informal, fun and a great confidence booster.

Positive Play

The Positive Play Programme is a home-based teaching support scheme that helps families manage their child's challenging behaviour. The programme is devised for families who have a pre-school child who is at least 2 1/2 years old, and who is causing concern due to significant behavioural difficulties.

Post Natal First Aid

NEW!

This 2 hour workshop will focus on First Aid for all the familiy including babies and young children and will be delivered by Stacey from Daisy First Aid.

The workshop will cover issues such as: adult, child and baby CPR and recovery positions, head injury, fevers and seizures, choking and fractures. It is ideal for pregnant mothers and new parents as well as those with older children.

Swimming

We have swimming sessions available in the heated indoor learner pool next door to our Goodwyns Road site at St Johns C of E Primary School. 

  • The sessions are private classes for Children’s Centre families only and the water is very warm.
  • The teacher is a qualified swimming teacher and she will be on hand to help and guide you.
  • Book a 4 week block for £12 (for one adult and one child under the age of 3 years).
  • Summer sessions run on Friday mornings from 28 July to 25 August, 10.00am - please book in advance, £3 per session for adult and child under 3 years. The session will be a structured Mothr and baby session to develop water confidence which will be run by the Children's Centre Team.

 

 

 

 

Toilet Training Workshop

We regularly run a one hour advice session for parents about toilet training on the last Friday each month from 10.30am - 11.30am at Goodwyns Road. This gives practical ideas and tips as well as helping parents to understand how children develop bladder control. If you would like to attend, please ring the centre and we can add your name to the waiting list.

 

 

Understanding Children's Behaviour

Feeling like you need some help to know what makes your child behave the way they do?  This 5 week course for mothers/fathers/carers of young children will help you identify factors that may affect your child’s behaviour and gives you LOTS of ideas that can help.

Come along and find out

  • how to encourage positive behaviour
  • how to deal with difficult behaviour

The next course runs for 5 weeks from Mon 12 June to Mon 10 July, 9.45 - 11.45am (creche available). Attendance is important so please only book if you can come along to all 5 sessions.

The course is free, however, we ask for a donation of £2 each week to cover refreshments and admin costs.
